December 4, 2011 - Massey Fly-In

Today was the bi-annual fly-in at Massey Aerodrome.  It was another perfect day weather-wise:  clear blue skies, light wind, warm and great visibility.  It is truly amazing to have an entire weekend this good in early December.   Since I flew the RV yesterday, I flew Bruce's Cub to the fly-in.

On the way over, I tuned in the Massey Unicom frequency and it sounded like BWI airport!  It was one airplane landing after another:  Mooney, Bonanza, RV, Cub, 172, ...

Lots of olive-drab taildraggers were at the fly-in.

Lots of Stearman's too.

A couple of Trunk Monkeys flew in.

There was lots of good food to be had.

They built a new hangar since the last time I was here.

Why re-type it when I can just show it?

The replica of the 1911 Wright Glider which kicked off modern soaring.

158 airplanes total attended the fly-in.

This T-6 was probably the biggest, baddest plane that showed up.  I watched him come in.  The pilot really knows how to fly it well.  He greased it in using maybe 1/3rd the runway.

RV row.   I estimate there were at least 10 RVs or so at the fly-in.

Mostly taildraggers at the fly-in.  Which makes sense.  Taildraggers love grass strips.

These two Kolb ultralights arrived overhead in formation.  It's good to see the Kolbs still flying.

My hangar neighbor Tom K. fires up his Maule.

The area on the east side of the runway was even filled up.

One plane after another came in for landing.   There were probably three planes ahead of me when I turned on final.   This was not a fly-in to give rides or do low passes.  There were just too many airplanes arriving, or later, departing.

The SeaWind got a lot of attention.  I've seen this airplane around a few times over the year.   Once in the RV I saw him down low over a river and I followed him around for awhile.

The Christian Eagle was popular as well.

A Woody Pusher taxiis out.  It's for sale if you are looking for something unique to fly.

I imagine the view is pretty good from the Woody.

Bob S., who is in my EAA Chapter, flew over in this snappy-looking gyro-coptor.

Dan B., another chapter member, taxiis out in his Taylorcraft.  Ooohh-Rah!

Looks like something right out of Dub-Dub Two.

Everybody loves a Stearman!

A good view of the round engine on front of the Cessna 195.

Max's newly restored Champ parked in the cornfield.

A Trike showing off -- he's going vertical!

The Fly-in was officially supposed to last from 1PM to 5PM.  I got there right at 1PM but I would say the majority of airplanes had already arrived.  About 2PM people started bugging out.   Along with a lot of other people, I enjoyed just standing on the "grassy knoll" watching airplanes takeoff and land.   Here, the tiny Pitts taxiis for takeoff.

SeaWind on the roll.

I was among the last planes to leave and enjoyed a pleasant flight back to Essex Skypark.   If you want to get some good pictures of you and your airplane, go to a Massey Fly-In.  Every plane is photographed by a photographer who knows what he is doing.    Here I am ont he takeoff roll.

Airborne!
